Being Less Dependent of Technology

My grandmother's generation always questions what would we do without electricity because they believe my generation relies on technology too much. I can honestly agree to her to an extent because I believe people rely on technology so much to the point that they cannot think nor do without it. I don't believe technology nor the people who invented/improved said technology are to blame because that's an issue within us. We lack the independence to be able to do things without our cellphones, music, etc. For example, I can't walk to class without listening to my music nor do I believe anyone else can. I am not saying technology is a horrible thing that was introduced to mankind, I'm simply questioning our independence or even control to do without it.

  1. I also believe that people in our world today get overwhelmed with technology and rely on it too much. The generations before us had more face-to-face contact and personal interactions than any generation to come. Technology is to blame in this situation, but it is a hard call because technology also helps us out in so many ways and we would be nowhere today without it. I think that we just need to stay independent from technology and not let it swallow our lives. People need to learn how to use technology efficiently instead of abuse it and waste more of their time.

  2. I agree that the obsession with technology can become a problem in extreme cases. There are also many positives that can come from a technology dependent civilization. For example, crimes were often very difficult to solve in the past. Now that many people carry smartphones police are able to use the GPS to determine where a person may have disappeared to, where a criminal is hiding, and many other positive uses. Before people were glued to smartphones this wasn't possible. I agree that people need to be independent of technology but it has definitely added to society in a positive manner as well.

  3. I totally agree with that. Technology is a great tool, but it isn't being used in the right way all of the time. People that are stuck to it are becoming less and less personable because they are doing all of their communicating through a screen. If used correctly, technology can be your greatest ally, but if not used correctly it will be the greatest enemy.

  4. Yes! Absolutely! I wish that our generation was not so dependent on technology, however, I do think it is beneficial. Technology has saved lives, when someone is in an emergency they have the ability to dial 911 immediately, or it can track their location if they are lost or in trouble. I think there are many benefits to technology, however, sometimes I find myself wishing I lived in the past where communication was real and refreshing.
